Somali-American police gathered Sunday night for a community conversation surrounding solutions to end gang violence gripping several Twin Cities and metro communities. State Sen. Zaynab Mohamed, DFL-Minneapolis, led the town hall, bringing together Somali-American police officers of multiple ranks and crime prevention specialists. The goal here is to talk to members of our own community who do public safety work, so we can learn from them and work with them, and most importantly, so they can talk about the issues that are impacting our community because we all share a goal of public safety, Sen. Mohamed said as she started the conversation. From mentorships, more involvement from community groups that can help, rehabilitation, accountability at home and with the justice system, and building trust between the Somali community and law enforcement, the possible solutions were shared to try and slow down a rash of recent violence stemming from Somali gangs.
